That\u2019s why we\u2019re proud to partner with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voxeljet.com\/\"><b>Voxeljet<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose advanced 3D printing technologies are transforming development processes\u2014from prototyping to production.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their collaboration with <\/span><b>Daimler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a prime example of this shift.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using the <\/span><b>VX1000 HSS industrial 3D printer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>PA12 material<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the team produced a <\/span><b>prototype of the vehicle\u2019s frontend (bumper)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, replacing 13 individually moulded parts with just 6 printed ones.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to <\/span><b>integrated functionality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the printed parts, the assembly no longer required gluing or sanding. Instead, it relied on simple mechanical clips\u2014a type of <\/span><b>\u201cclick system.\u201d<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that during the design phase, key features such as <\/span><b>connectors, alignment guides, and fastening geometries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were already embedded into the 3D-printed structure. Most of the assembly solutions were built directly into the components\u2014eliminating the need for post-processing or additional steps.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, the entire assembly was achieved using <\/span><b>mechanical joints<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, without adhesives or surface finishing such as sanding or edge class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"57\" data-end=\"273\">The parts varied significantly in size\u2014the largest measured <strong>971 x 375 x 152 mm, while the smallest was 292 x 98 x 65 mm.<\/strong> Despite this variation, all components achieved excellent accuracy <strong>within a tolerance of \u00b10.3%.<\/strong> The entire project was completed in three print jobs, <strong>with a total printing time of approximately 50 hours.<\/strong> There was no direct comparison with plastic injection molding in this case; however, using traditional methods, the same assembly would have required 11 separate components, each with its own mold and production process.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits were immediately visible:<\/span><\/p><p><b>No need for expensive tooling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 no up-front investment in moulds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><b>Simplified assembly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 fewer manual steps and reduced production time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><b>Faster testing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 parts were ready for aerodynamic testing without additional preparation<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced the number of assembly steps,<\/span><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eliminated variability associated with manual processes,<\/span><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and lowered overall prototyping costs and turnaround times.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br shuttles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014additive manufacturing is a highly effective alternative.
